Electricity market in Ohio
Ohio allows electric supplier choice for many customers served by investor-owned electric distribution utilities. The local utility remains the monopoly delivery company, while a PUCO-certified competitive retail electric service supplier can provide the generation portion. Customers of municipal systems, electric cooperatives and certain assistance programs may not be eligible for the same choice program, so eligibility should be confirmed before comparing offers.
Ohio choice is concentrated in investor-owned utility territories and does not automatically extend to every municipal or cooperative system. Governmental aggregation can also enroll eligible residents under community terms. Confirming the utility and aggregation status first prevents comparisons against offers that are not actually available to the household.
